Can You EVER have enough Storage Space?

One of the things WE love about our home is our main living area with it’s vaulted ceilings and odd shaped walls.  Something we didn’t like about this house was the limited storage as we have no basement.

One of the things I love in our home, is my talented husband!  I can just tell him about an idea I have and draw a little sketch.  He does a little measuring, draws a real plan . . . and makes it for me.

Now, everyone knows how I love to collect pottery, glass and BIG décor items and all kinds of other stuff; lots of pieces that are difficult to store, especially in a small home like ours.  I got really tired of shoving everything in bins under the beds.  In the first place, we only have two beds (and one is a twin), and secondly, there are things under there already.

I did design & Hubs built, a special size storage area attached to the bottom of the twin bed frame.  It’s just a simple attached drawer with a little hook to close it.

Unlatch the hook, the door drops down and items are slid in.  This holds my large paper, matting and artwork.  The bed cover hides it, so we just left it raw.

Another easy little idea provided extra coat storage.  In the laundry room, a simple strip of molding was attached to the wall and hooks were added.  The laundry room is a pass through to the garage and back door entrance, so is a perfect spot for hanging casual jackets, sweaters and the occasional dog leash.

Artzzle EXTRA STORAGE Feature

TIP:  Be sure to anchor the molding strip to a stud or two on your wall.  That will accommodate the weight of your hanging items, so the molding doesn’t pull away from the wall over time.  Our Projects List includes eventual cabinets for the laundry room as well.  For a temporary fix I added shelves, featured HERE.

We’ve made sure most of our occasional tables and furniture pieces have drawers and shelves, so that helps oodles.
TIP:
DOUBLE DUTY furniture pieces provide extra storage for any size space.  A dresser could be used as a TV stand, with the drawers storage for equipment.  End tables with shelves and/or drawers can be used in many rooms.  Coffee tables with a shelf or open legs can house baskets for extra storage.

Your next question “Do we have enough storage space now?”

My question . . . “Does anyone EVER have enough storage space?”

This is our entry way.  At the top of the shot you can see some of our angled, fun colored walls.  I say “way” because it is simply a space between the front door and a closet; both which are an actual part of the living room.  There’s no separate foyer.

Artzzle EXTRA STORAGE Feature

We’re accustomed to this feature.  Our previous rambler was also designed with a little closet directly by the front room door.    That is the only commonality in the two homes.  Today’s market standards categorize this home as small at 1550 sq. ft., but our other rambler was only a 960 sq. ft. plan.  Now THAT was small, but that house had a basement.  Don’t worry though, it was fine.  And YES, we did a lot of changing, rearranging and customizing in that.  Had to with 5 kids between us.

We really enjoy this entry closet because of it’s angles and the fun walls around it, on the outside.  But, recently I was cleaning the closet, and getting frustrated with that jagged corner space inside, where all the less-important, rarely used junk  stuff gets shoved.  When the hanging rod is full, you can’t even get back in there.

Plus, we store leftover paints in there, so they don’t freeze in the winter.  I hate seeing those every time I opened the door.

Soooooo,  I went to find Hubs.  I talked, he measured, he drew and then . . . began building.  From this . . .

To this. Here a second upper full length shelf was also added.

And finally, this.

Nice, right?  Was I satisfied?

Well, no.  You could now see even more “stuff” when the doors were open.

Solution:  We had a fabric shower curtain in the donation bin.  So I had him adapt for a rod.

And voila’, see no more evil!

Was that enough . . . uhhm . . . almost.

For that higher area, I took a simple tension rod and put up the valance to the old shower curtain.  Now . . . done!

So Cheryl now has even more storage AND it’s pretty, well sort of.  At least stuff is stored and hidden!

TIP:  Don’t overlook small corners and odd spaces in your home that could be utilized for storage.  IMAGINE and EXPERIMENT with spaces, pieces and places.  Have fun!

Lots more going on around here, even other storage projects, so, we’ll talk again soon!

Until then, stay positive to stay productive 🙂

What ARE These Things?

Wow, I’m getting this Whatever Wednesday series down!

Everyone knows how I love to use everyday items in unusual ways.  When I found these at the local thrift store where I volunteer … well, I wondered “What the heck are these things”? But I didn’t really care what they were supposed to be for.  I just knew exactly what I was going to do with them.

ARTZZLE

It’s doubtful I’ve ever mentioned it, but among my other collectibles, I have tons of purses.

ARTZZLE

Lately Hubs and I have been on this “down-sizing” campaign, trying to rid our little abode of all things not regularly used … i.e. we’ve been clearing out a lot of stuff. I hesitate to use the word “junk”, because most of it was loved and valued at one time or another.

Anyhoo, this week I attacked all those purses.  For many moons now, I’ve wanted to give my little walk-in closet a new look, so figured this was a great way to start.  For you ladies out there, I don’t know how this number will hit you, but my purses numbered twenty.  In all fairness, that does include a leather fanny pack and a tiny black evening purse, so technically only eighteen.

I use an easy method when “cleaning out” and I’ll share that in a later post  But after pairing down the purses …

I got back to those brass thing-ies.

Each piece was dismantled …

removing the hooks from their mountings …

and then working them through the wire shelving in my closet.

You’re seeing double here because I have a full length mirror on the back wall of the closet.

ARTZZLE

And now, I put my original idea into motion.

ARTZZLE

I don’t mind that these hang down over the mirror because we have another one in the adjacent hallway.  The closet mirror is mostly to get more light in there.

ARTZZLE

I’m really happy with this project, because I love having the purses in easy view and access.  More importantly, I gained a ton of shelf space where these had been stuffed in.

SUMMING UP

1.  The four brass hook deals were $1 for all.  I saved the brackets … I’m sure I’ll use those somewhere!

QUESTIONS

So, how many purses are okay? Is twenty too many, is five not enough?
You know how curious I am, so tell me what you think.
And … how many do YOU have?

Halloween is Scary … Paint Color Choices Don’t Have To Be

Halloween is scary fun. For most people, choosing paint colors is also scary, but not fun. Making paint color choices doesn’t have to scare you to death. All you have to do is start with a great inspiration piece. Fabrics are fantastic color aids. It could be as easy as using a favorite blouse in your closet or finding a gorgeous pattern at the fabric store.

For this article, I used two of my favorite resources, Sherwin Williams paints and FABRIC.COM At either of these, you could browse for hours for something that catches your eye. It’s just easier to begin with a fabric you like and draw colors from that. Don’t worry about what the fabric might be used for, just go for your gut feelings and those “Ooh Ahh” and “Wow” reactions to things.

Artzzle.com

You may feel like you’re back to square one, with the many colors choices in these examples. But stay calm, these are compact groups to work with, not the entire paint deck! I’m not telling you to use all of the colors at once, but just giving you a nice, narrowed down selection to look at.

Note here, that with everything done online, colors are influenced by computer settings, so it’s always best to do your final shopping with actual samples to view.
REMEMBER, each of the colors mentioned have their own variations and color strip. So once you have a favorite or two, you can find more tints and shades if you want to stay with just one color family.

Only you know what levels of color you’re comfortable with. You may feel safer using lighter colors on walls. Perhaps you have lots of windows in a room, and aren’t afraid of darker colors, either as an accent on one wall or throughout the room.

For several areas open to one another, again consider your natural lighting. You could use darker paints in bright rooms, mid-tones in less well lighted rooms, and lightest tones in darkest areas of your floor plan.

Now consider where and how you could use the fabric. For example, it could be in draperies or window treatments in one room, as chair or chair seats in another, and toss pillows or a throw in yet another connecting room. And don’t forget to give your main fabric some friends, a few coordinating fabrics.

The next example is definitely a “one room” category. At least most people wouldn’t like pink enough to use it throughout the main living areas.

This material/color scheme would be fun for a “girly girl’s” bedroom or in any gal’s dressing room or closet. I can also see it in a sewing room or a woman’s home office.

Owls are trending at the moment. The pattern below could be very cute in a nursery or child’s play room.

Another great inspiration is nature. Resources here are endless. You might find a fantastic landscape painting or photograph on line, or have some personal photos of your own that you could refer to. I’ve given you a couple of mine below.
