Thoughts for Thursday

Hi All,

Is it really Thursday … already?! Well I’m glad, not because the weekend is coming as I’ll be doing wedding work straight through anyway. But Thursday means I can take a nice, long break and get a post out to you! So here are a few thoughts for Thursday.

My fingers are bruised and burned from all the cutting, gluing and re-doing of bouts and bouquets. NO, I’m not finished, not even close, but YES I’ll give you a teaser of progress so far. And YES, I will give you a tutorial post on the bouts, but later …. much later! Remember to click on the photos to get a better look.

As my assembly line routine moves along wih the flowers, I get some daydreaming in while working. Hey, double-duty with my time … yay. Course that might contribute to some of the burns 😦 The idea list for future projects is lengthy, and there have been some great junking and treasure trips of late, so my objects and supplies are growing too! Here’s what I’ve been daydreaming about.

Metals, Woods and Fabric Goods

FABRICS
A planned project is to make several toss pillows. Wal-Mart had some great fabric sales recently, so I marched right over, with definite ideas in my head. We all know that you don’t alwas automatically find what you thought you wanted when you walked in. This trip I wanted 3 (that magic number again!) patterns for the living room. Saw one terrific main design and a second, so-so workable pattern but just couldn’t come up with that third neutral texture. Okay, so mom’s voice said keep an open mind, stay positive. Low and behold, I found 3 fantastic patterns that would work in the guest room, the family room or as a change out in the master bedroom. Eurecka! So, there you go … and here they are, pictured below.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Blues, browns and tan are the main colors in the guest bedroom. Our family room walls are a mid-range tan, sort of dull gold, and the master is a lighter, brighter neutral cream so these choices will work with all three.

WOODS
I’m always scouting for objects with fun shapes and of course, anything wooden is popular right now, in all styles of decor. One of our neighbors about four miles over (remember we live in the country) has a big old poll barn, make that a GIGANTIC pole barn and it’s a picker’s heaven. Here are some wooden pieces I adopted recently at one of his famous Barn Sales.

Now you’re saying, “what the heck can she do with those?”. And my answer is “how the heck do I know … yet”. But Hubs has taken to sketching out some of my ideas and when he starts drawing, something good always happens. You’ll just have to be patient along with me, as there’s often some distance between the drawing and the doing parts. HINT: I want a floor piece of artwork using at least some of the wood stuff, something that stands about 4-5 feet high, and I love copper piping. Wonder what he’ll come up with.

METALS
For some reason, I’ve become drawn to metal baskets and wire containers. You’ll remember the painted buckets from last month, but here are some tiny ones I just found.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And look at these cool baskets and weird little shelf looking objects we’ve collected. My favorites are the bigger milk box that has a Minnesota tag on it, and the wonderful, metal handled basket. I know I won’t paint over the local tag as that’s part of the history of the piece.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The basket is a dilema for me though. It’s just fine (and very appealing) as it is, after a little clean-up. But then, I keep picturing it in some bright color too. We’ll all have to wait and see on that one.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

One more shot of fun finds of the fabric kind. I know, I know, I’m not staying in the right order. It’s the old “I’m so excited I just have to write it down quick” thing happening today.

Here are some beautiful scarves I’ve found recently. No collectibles like VERA or KIM PARKERs but nice just the same. Two square ones in different sizes, and two more that are oblong and perfect for table runners OR dress up. There’s that double-duty I like. Spent no more than $0.50 – $1.75 on any of these, so economical too.

Now, I really do need to get back to the flower project. Oops … it’s already 2:00 p.m. Guess it would be a good idea to eat something too! Eating … that reminds me of a great E-Z recipe a friend gave me the other day. YES, me actually talking about cooking … amazing right! But the key words here are EASY, CHEAP, DELICIOUS and PRETTY presentation and it doesn’t even take much time.

But guess what, I forgot to take a picture before I ate it (yes all of it), so you’ll have to stay in touch to find out more.

Meanwhile, have a safe, fun weekend and remember, don’t stress, just start something!

Here’s where I always say thanks “for visiting. You’ve just read “Thoughtful Thursday” on Artzzle. I love comments and questions so send “em” my way”.

Here’s a little something else today. I know from several comments and emails that you’re enjoying Artzzle.com and I’m so glad. Now, can I ask you (actually beg you) to spread the word to your friends … co-workers … strangers on the street … just anyone! I love doing the blog but one of my goals is to acquire some sponsors, advertisers and hopefully a little bit of green, so Hubs doesn’t have to work so hard! For that I need followers, viewers and lots of comments to build my stats and entice those customers over.

Thanks, I knew you’d understand. 🙂

Oxymoron Mondays

Some Sunday stroll lovelies. This is not a formal, structured arrangement; no tape, wire or frogs. I've just filled the vase with water, insert taller pieces, then clump a few similar flowers together and begin placing them here and there. Here I've used 3 types of wild flowers - Brown Eyed Susan's, Daisies and Alfalfa; 3 fillers - Russian Sage, and two wild grasses are added for height, texture and filler. Continually watered, these will last for several days.

Words are fun aren’t they? One of my favorites is “oxymoron”.

Merriam Webster says: “Definition OXYMORON
:a combination of contradictory or incongruous words (as cruel kindness); broadly: something (as a concept) that is made up of contradictory or incongruous elements”

Monday is a big ole oxymoron for me. It can be slow and draggy, because I didn’t want the weekend to end, but it might also be energized and inspired from events of the previous two days. Monday this week is just a big mix of moods and must do’s.

Awoke to beautiful sunshine, but 7:00 am was way too early, as 2:00 a.m. was bedtime last night (remember we’re night people because of Hubs’ job). So a little draggy, but we have to drop off a vehicle at the shop before DB leaves for work, so I need to get going.

I assembled tools to begin making bouts. * Two widths of satin ribbon in two colors * Tin snips * Wire (this is 26 gauge, suitable for small projects and beaded strips) * Hot glue gun * Optional Crimper (sometimes it's fun to crimp some of your ribbon) * Pearl tipped strait pins

Lots to do today; usual cleaning but also have to begin the boutonnieres for the wedding. That word never looks right no matter how you spell it, so I always have to check! Anyway, have to at least start the “bouts (boots)” but only have 5 so not a huge chore. Haven’t done any recent projects that work for a good post, but have lots of ideas for upcoming slots. Because of short night, I’ll probably need an afternoon nap. And the list grows. You know what I mean.

Our primary flowers are the roses, with 3 sizes of blooms on each stem. For the bouts, I've cut the smallest bud, which will be the main flower in the boutonniere. Always give your cuts as much of the stem as possible; too long is better than too short!

I’ve also cut the smallest clumps of our neutral flowers, to be used in the bouts, and pulled 1 small section from the variegated filler as well.
TIP: When doing your cuttings, always keep any remnants of flowers, leaves and wire. They may come in handy somewhere along the process.

Here are little extra pieces that fell from the main stems. I always keep EVERYTHING, until the project is finished.

Each of my days start with an email check, but Monday’s are especially nice, because I get so many inspirational tidbits from my blogger buddies. Today was not a let-down. Wanting to start quietly, I opened LEAF AND TWIG first to see the wonderful words and images awaiting there. Next I was energized with that beautiful voice over at CHARLOTTE HOATHER’s site.

Now I was ready for whatever mixed media piece THE SEASONED HOMEMAKER was sharing today. This time it was about sewing which isn’t one of my talents, BUT I learned something to pass on to Hubs, as he begins his upholstering adventures. Then colorful inspiration hit me from Donna’s post at DECORATING WITH DONNA.

And finally I followed up on comments from BENJAMIN VOGT‘s weekend gardening discussion over at HOUZZ. Benjamin one of HOUZZ’s regular contributors on gardening, and specializes in natural or native species plants.

Well, the day is half over and there’s still more to do. I’ll post a full tutorial when I work on the boutonnieres. Lot’s of great links today and more on the FUN PLACES list to check out too!

Meantime, our entire week here is supposed to be beautiful weather. Hope yours is too. And remember, don’t stress, just start.

Minnesota Nice … AND Busy

In our state we have a saying “Minnesota Nice” because we think we’re pretty likeable. Well, whether the weather is cold or hot, we also keep very busy in Minnesota. August and September are our last warm months of the year, which means busy … busy … busy, and I am too!

Our oldest daughter is getting remarried later this month and my contribution is the flowers. She and I went “silks” shopping last weekend at a local MICHAELS. In floral design, once again my magic number three is employed. I had her choose a primary flower – the two-toned roses; a secondary flower – the smaller pink blossomed stems and a filler, the neutral creme, multi-blossomed stems. Add greens and ribbon and there you go. Our greens here are varigated to add a little more interest and pull in the neutral. Her colors are dark pink, ivory and silver for the metallic.

Three types of flowers, greens and ribbons

I will post a “how to” as I assemble the bouts and bouquets. Silk flowers are easy to work with and very economical for weddings vs. fresh flowers and arrangements. More on that in the tutorial post.

It’s fair time in Minnesota so check it out here STATE FAIR

RE USE MINNESOTA is another of my recent web finds. If you get to the state fair check out their decorating exhibit “Room with a “Re” Purpose. Should be interesting.

ReUSE featured at State Fair We are very excited to present “Room with a ‘Re’Purpose” at the State Fair this year. Through beautiful interior design and furniture ideas, we will demonstrate opportunities to reuse and repair everyday items. In the Eco Experience’s Dept. of Commerce’s energy home.

In September I’m headed to JUNK BONANZA Check it out for a ton of fun! Am hoping to drag along my son and his lady, because they live down that way and they’re a blast at these things.

And I’ve found a wonderful reference that lists stores, festivals and junking jaunts, not only in Minnesota but across the country. So even if you’re on vacation you can plan to pop in at a few places along your way! Check it out at
FLEA QUEST.

Answer to last time’s Kim Parker question.

The question today is “Who is KIM PARKER and why do I love her book so much?”
Kim is a well known artist and designer of textiles and home design items. She has product lines in many major department stores. I found her through her first book “Kim Parker Home” and was recently very honored to have her join me on HOUZZ as an Artzzle follower. Check out her link or find her on her HOUZZ page (or following along on MY HOUZZ page).

This time, the question is for you to answer and it’s two part; what does the rest of your summer look like AND will you share your favorite haunts, fests and fairs with me on Artzzle?

Check out all the article links and attack the new “FUN PLACES” list.
With weddings and house guests, fairs and fun fests galore, I’m super busy for the next several weeks. But I’ll try to get one or two posts in each week.

Oops, speaking of guests, I have a bunch coming for dinner tonight, so better get going. Don’t worry, it’s VERY casual and they’re bringing the pizza. All I have to do is clean … oh man, it’s 4:00 already!

Remember, don’t stress, just start.

The Oomph Returns!

Hi and Happy August.

Regulars know that I’ve been bummed and blue after the recent loss of Freddy. Even my crazy cousins’ visit and our fun shopping escapades, didn’t lift the doom cloud completely. I just haven’t found or projected much inspiration lately.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Energy levels began rising yesterday when Hubs took a mid-week vacation day. Gorgeous weather allowed us to get lots done in the yard. I’m always more energetic when he’s out there working with me! Do you feel like that about your partner? Anyway, look what we cleaned up and hauled to the field.

As is often the case, I forgot about pictures, so no before shots. But you would have just seen “Befores” that were dead trees and shrubs, and big holes in the “Afters”.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

One lilac got moved, to replace a cottoneaster shrub, but otherwise no big changes for photo ops. Several other large bushes did get substantial hair cuts, but again, I never thought about B4 images.

Last year this two-trunk oddity came up in a planting bed by the family room west window. We forgot to pull it and this summer it’s gigantic. I think it’s a cast off root of a former shrub that was removed long ago, but can’t remember the name. We decided to let it continue a few more seasons and see what happens.

It’s sad to have to remove trees. As for shrubs, I always assumed if they remained healthy they were long lasting. I’ve learned that many do have long lifespans. But others, especially some of the more woody stemmed varieties like ninebarks, reach a point where they can no longer be pruned effectively and the roots begin taking all the nourishment from other plants in your bed.

The reddish bush pictured below is a 13 year diablo ninebark that will probably have to go next season.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

On an ending note here are a couple of shots of our front entrance area.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Here’s a question for you.

Who is Kim Parker and why do I love her book so much?

Find out next time!
Meanwhile, don’t stress, just start.

What’s the Difference … Staging vs. Decorating

Hi there. I’m back to an earlier posting schedule, hoping to get at least two notes out to you this week. Last time we spoke of staging vs. decorating, and I wanted to touch on some of the differences today. Yes, there is a difference … a major one! But it’s not complicated. I like to keep things simple, and tell people to just think of staging vs. decorating as public vs. private, or leaving vs. living.

In staging, you’re leaving the home, you are appealing to the public so you want others to be able to picture themselves there. When decorating, you are telling your private story, sharing your many treasures to show how you live there. As sellers, remember that you are leaving now, so pack up all the personal stuff.

For a good example, I compare home staging to theater staging. In school and community theater, I’ve often helped build and prop sets for plays. On stage, limited spaces must represent several places. You have to define a room but leave it open to viewer interpretation. You also have to limit your props to allow actors to move about freely. In effect, you’re presenting an illusion, giving people a sense of something, which then allows them to imagine further.

This room is wonderfully staged. Colors are VERY neutral and decorative props are basic. Bare windows and good arrangement instantly show off the $$ lakefront location and invite the viewer through the room take a closer look at the water. If decorated, walls could be more colorful, and windows would be draped. Table tops and couch would not be bare, and the mantle could display a favored art piece and more personal treasures, rather than the generic pieces featured..

In staging your home, the goal should be similar to the theater set. Give buyers the illusion of what a wonderful house it could be for them. You want your prospect to get an immediate sense of the room, but keep it basic to allow them to imagine what it could be if it were theirs. You’re leaving and you want them to come live there.

All white vs. color is sometimes a debate when staging. The idea that everything should be painted white when staging, is a bygone premise these days. As a long time realtor turned stager, I’ve realized that all white is a negative more often than a positive selling feature. It presents coldly, often stripping a room of warmth and character possibilities. Those fearful of too much color are just as hesitant with none at all. A soft, neutral hue is comfortable but not frightening to most everyone. To stage this room, I would paint a very light, warm beige (taking colors from the tile in the adjoining room). This would compliment the warm, mixed wood tones and also accent the next room, creating great flow.

For every statement or suggestion in decor, an opposite or contradicting view can be presented. While white walls can be cold, this room is certainly not chilling. Here the walls are accompanied by warm toned accessories, lots of marvelous textures and basic but BIG decor pieces, which stage this space beautifully. Again, in decorating there would be a bit more accessories on the bed tables, and perhaps a bench with area rug at the end of the bed.

I feel this would definitely be a staged room. Light, bright but not ALL white. A little tricycle prop in the adjoining room. Nice, but if there are little tykes to go along with the trike, it’s doubtful you would have white cloth dining chairs and crystal vases on the table for everyday living. And speaking of walls, that paint had better be highly scrubbable in such a light color.

I’m torn with this shot determining staged vs. decorated. This is just a gorgeous space how ever you look at it. It is definitely nicely decorated (love it) but I think you would get plenty of “ooh ahhs” from prospective buyers as well. And when selling, you have to also give people something GOOD to remember you by … so they’ll buy!

This is a wonderul example of what just a touch of wall color can do. Picture these rooms WITHOUT the gray upper walls. Even with the dark counter and floors, it would just be bland. The gray zips it up and adds a certain something … warmth … elegance. (I dislike the word “pop” in decor).

Wow. This is a decorated vs. staged for me. The distinctive blues used are very personal color choices, not favorable to everyone. And I enjoy all the personal pieces on the shelves. Mine would certainly be filled this way to live, but perhaps not to sell.

While many believe that dark colors should never be used in small rooms, I feel they can be very effective, and shouldn’t be dismissed when decorating. I applaud the bravado of color choices in this as a personal space, but for staging … not so much. Great living room though, but I like LOTS of color. Your buyers may not.

Whether you’re selling or staying in your home, it’s good to clean out the clutter and less stuff is usually better than more. In staging “pieces” should be effective while kept to a minimum. But likewise in your personal decorating, don’t display every single thing you own all at once. By changing out items and displays, you give yourself several new looks over time without being over board at any time.

Above all, have fun and … don’t stress, just start.

When things just don’t come together

Hi everyone. Sorry no posts yet this week. After two attempts, I had a lot of good ideas, yet nothing was cominig together. But you know me, three is my lucky number, so let’s hope the third time is a charm.

Everybody has times when things just don’t gel well. Interiors don’t always come together when we’d like them to, either. But hey, it’s your home. There’s no time limit on buying the right couch. Registering a polished style by a certain age, is not a requirement. You won’t receive a bad grade if you try the wrong paint color. So relax.

Last weekend my guests and I relaxed … by shopping. We explored a huge antique store in Elk River, had a sandwich lunch in a quaint little bakery there and hit some great thrift and outlet stores on the way home. Was that ever fun and look what I found.

Not sure what I’ll do with the three bright buckets but for now they are hanging on my studio rack, just looking pretty and making me feel good. They were $1 each at the Elk River Goodwill.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

At the moment, my living areas have several different tans, browns and metallic colors so this rug pattern is a perfect addition. It’s also a triple duty piece, as it can be used in two other rooms as well.

Look closely and you’ll see a furry black face on a chair in the family room. That would be Fozzy! He’s never far away from me.

The 5 x 7 new rug was a bargain for $49.99 at the Milaca Unclaimed Freight outlet. An 8 x 10 would have been a better fit, but that pattern & size weren’t in the store, and though only $99.99, it wouldn’t have been in my budget either. So, I took the leaf out of the dining room table, and got a fresh new look.

Below are some fun finds from an earlier trip to Discovery Thrift Store in Milaca, Minnesota. Not a formal grouping, just wanted to show each of them to you.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The apple cookie jar jumped out at me on the shelf and $2.99 was budget friendly. The cup & tray set was a new item, still in the box. Another good deal at $2.99, with modern colors and a funky design. These mini books are popping up everywhere lately. They’re fun and just the right size for a party favor or an accent on a gift package. This is one of three purchased for just $0.49 each.

We all search out decor ideas, we want and work for a certain look, but sometimes it just doesn’t come together right away. Decorating is meant to develope with you over time, not for you on a scheduled date. Part of the fun is in the finding, the collecting of the treasures that will tell your story.

Please don’t be like a former neighbor of mine, who never felt competent or comfortable with any aspect of decorating. A living room stood empty for years. I visited one day and the door opened to reveal a fully furnished frontroom. Every item in a styled showroom had been purchased, and set up exactly that way in her room. As a stager and showroom stylist, I have to say it was beautiful. But it was staged NOT decorated.

“There, it’s done” she proclaimed. “Now I can forget about it”, and she did just that. In all the time we knew them, it remained a forgotten room, just an acceptable way to greet visitors. Her “proper” tree was displayed in the window every Christmas for passers-by to see, but no flames ever warmed the fireplace. No one ever snuggled on the cozy couch in front it.

There IS a difference between Staged and Decorated. Catch an upcoming post for more info.

Meanwhile, enjoy the rest of your week and remember, don’t stress, just start.

A few “Ohh’s and Ah’s”

Not very driven with ambition today, but I need to accelerate it and get the house ready for weekend guests arriving on Thursday evening. So after the usual morning computer check, a little (LOT) instant inspiration was required. I’m sharing some findings that boosted my spirits, some uplifting “Ooh Ahs” for inspiration. Hope they work for you too!

As usual, click on the pics to enlarge them and explore the links for their sources. Enjoy.

Upon discovering this photo quite some time ago, I literally gasped and knew it had to be saved for a future post. A wonderful example of how display can be so very simple but achieve such breathtaking reactions.

This is from one of my HOUZZ Ideabooks “Color”. It’s really In Your Face but in a nice way.

Ah, can I ever stress “Simple” enough? Substitute “easy” if that’s the word you prefer. Either way, this look could be done by anyone, It just made me smile.

Speaking of smiling.

Simple, simple, simple but so effective! Okay, you get the idea.

Everything just fantastic here and it all works together perfectly. Wonderful display with my three “C’s” Clean, Comfortable, Colorful. Wow.

I’m not even much of a “yellows” gal but how could anyone not enjoy this (at least just to look at)!

And MORE color here! Ahh. And once again, simple. Start with a neutral wall color (will work with lots of themes), choose an inspiration piece (the beautiful toss pillow), bring in colors from that item and finally add an accent color for some extra pizzazz. Here it’s the coral flowers on the nightstand. This is also a great example of some of the “rules” I use. The nightstand has 3 simple items at 3 different heights. There are 3 smaller toss pillows and yes, only two bigger pillows BUT together, you’re still working with an odd number in your display. Unlike what we’ve always been told, ODD is good, DIFFERENT is delightful.

Remember decorating is personal so make it “YOU”. And don’t forget that decor rules are the stairway to your design, but it’s OK to skip a few steps. My 3 Rule is a suggested place to start, but once you get your motor revved up, take off down your own road.

Think my guests would appreciate this guest room. I sure would.

And finally, sometimes we just need things to be black and white.

This is such fun, I could go on forever, but have to get going on my house. Well, I’m cheered and this has kicked me into, if not HIGH Gear, at least to a bit more driven speed. So I best get goin’ while the gettin’s good!

Before closing, I want to thank everyone for your condolence emails, at the passing of our beloved pet Freddy. In decor I always say “don’t stress, just start”. As everyone knows, life isn’t ever that easy. But kind words and a smile certainly help us all along the way, so thank you all.

My Favorite Freddy

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Tears are tumbling down my cheek, as I mourn the loss of my Freddy, so sweet. He barely made it to year eleven before he went to puppy heaven. He leaves behind a sad mom and dad, and the best sis and brother a dog ever had.

Litter brother Fozzy, sis Gracie and Freddy.

If you are a pet person, you know that even in a family atmosphere, while a dog likes everyone, he really belongs to just one, he’s that person’s dog. While dogs have almost always been a part of my family life, I’ve never really had one that was truly “my dog”. They all loved me but had a different family member as their favorite person. The boys, Fozzy and Fred, both chose me. They are my shadows, my protectors, my companions and comforters. They are labrador/newfoundland mixes and we have never had more tactile, loving, intelligent or comical dogs. Yes, these silly siblings have cracked us up many times over the years.

Out of a litter of 13 pups, 12 lived. Fozzy was the biggest and Freddy, the runt. We only intended to take Fozzy home, but no one had chosen Fred, and he tore at our heart strings, he was so adorable. The rest is, as they say, history.

Like a newfie, Fred was snuggly with long, soft fur, but inside he was all retriever. Until just a few weeks before we lost him, he still wanted to chase that ball 24/7. I’m sure he’s still running for it up in doggy heaven.

Freddy with THE ball and Gracie.

Thank you Freddy, for bringing so much love and joy to our lives. We’ll remember you always.

Goodbye our favorite Freddy, the one we love more than any other Freddy … in the whole world.

Thrift Store Stories

It’s truly summer in Minnesota now. The 4th of July holiday has past, the weather is hot and muggy, and mosquitos are the worst we’ve had in years. You literally cannot go outside without first soaking yourself in bug spray.

While Hubs was home last week, we got tons of things done, but today it’s back to normal. I wanted to stay in the air conditioning though, so checked out some of my notebooks and photos to see what would work for a post.

If you haven’t yet realized it, I’m a big proponent of thrift store shopping. Today I’m including some shots taken at a favorite local spot, FAMILY PATHWAYS. Family Pathways has several stores and locations. These photos are from the Princeton, Minnesota store, where they graciously allow me to stroll the aisles and snap things. Look what I found this trip. As always, just click the picture to enlarge it for a better view.

Artwork is always an important part of your decor, but can be expensive, and often poorly framed. The first two items are actually original artwork, beautiful watercolors in very attractive frames.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

How can you not approve of these. Prices here were $2.50 for #1 and $5.00 for #2 (look close and you can make out the little price stickers). The second piece is even double matted and in a nice, layered wood frame. Wow.

Picture #3 appears to be either a scratchboard or lino cut technique. Scratchboard gives you a reverse affect, white on black. The board has a black surface and you literally scratch your drawing into it, so it appears to be drawn in white. It could also be a lino cut piece, where you have a tile covered piece of wood and use tools to carve your drawing into the surface. You then roll ink on the surface of your tile and print it onto paper. #3 is a much larger piece and was marked $7.50.

The neutrality of this artwork gives you a double-duty piece, as you could use it with any color scheme. Wonderful.

On this same trip, I snapped these two versatile furniture pieces. The caned back, leather seated chair was $7.00 and the fantastic galss topped, all wood coffee table was $10.00. Seriously.

Just a little oil and some windex would have spruced up the table just fine, and the leather and caning were in perfect shape as is, but for those of you who like painted furniture, this would be a wonderful project for a side chair to use in any room of the house.

This trip also featured several nice toss pillows in varied styles, from $1-$3.

I do buy used toss pillows, if the fabric is tight, in good repair and clean or washable. When laundering this type of pillow, balance your load in the washer, use cold water on the gentle or shortest cycle, and dry on the fluff cycle at the lowest temperature. Most of my 2nd hand pillows are purchased to use as a filler and I make new covers. Using “as-is” or to cover, either way you’ll want to have a clean piece. If you pay such minimal amounts, you’re not out much if they don’t make it through the wash.

Regular readers know that I love pottery and have a good sized collection. This next photo is just a regular commercial piece, nothing collectible. But it has a great shape and nice decorating colors, and was only at a $3 price. You have to consider everything … this had ugly, faux leaves sticking out of it, but those could easily be removed. Don’t overlook a bargain.

One last example before I go. This modern, light framed piece features painted glass, with a sheet of floral prints behind. I broke down and bought this one (only $2). I took it home and will mount some of my own nature shots in the windows. I especially like that you can hang it vertically or horizontally. Always look for more than one use.

Don’t be shy about frequenting your area thrift stores. What some once considered a stigma is now something that everyone does. And I mean everyone. Just look at some of the fancy cars parked at those shops when you drive by! Everybody likes a great bargain!

Being retired now, I too, have to take care with my dollars, just as I did when we were younger and just starting out. But your home should be your haven, and any type of “value” you can use to make it your special place, is a great find so have fun finding things!

As always, don’t stress, just start.

Great “Grout” Info

Hi all.

Tiling has been on my research roster of late, as there are two projects I’m determined to complete before Fall. With this year’s wierd weather, who knows how much time I have left so better get going! Hubs and I have been daydreaming, window shopping and webbing about tile; it’s fun. I’m excited because with all the options out there now, I’ll be able to design and install our own unique look, on a very affordable budget. Lots more choices than were available with my first tiling job, quite a while back. Once again, HOUZZ provided much insite.

Below, I want to share this great article from HOUZZ, by one of their regular contributors, Contractor John Whipple. Click on the title above the picture, or the beginning content below it, and you’ll find the entire article. Within the piece, you can also click on John’s name and see more information on him as well. Have fun.

In my long ago project, the tiling itself went well and looked great. What ruined the process was NOT sealing the grout. Oh, I mixed and applied it properly but my “then” spouse declared it an uneccessary step and he refused to pay for anything more. Well, as was often the case, he was (shall we just say) incorrect. Sealing the grout was a very important step and because I didn’t, in just a couple years the grout crumbled and the entire project was ruined.

My mom always told us life isn’t perfect for anyone. She encouragd us to take something positive from every negative situation, and then take action. So with my first tiling job, I learned the importance of sealing grout and I took action …. I filed for divorce.

Hubs and I are in our 28th year of a great marriage, but we’ve been together 30. Mom also told us to “never jump from the frying pan into the fire”. Such a smart woman she was! I miss her everyday.

As always, don’t stress, just start.
